Sulfuric Acid Spill Investigation Continues

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says reporting protocols will be reviewed following a spill last week of sulfuric acid into the Rainy River system at the Packaging Corporation mill in International Falls.

Ontario authorities weren’t notified about the 2,000-3,000 gallon leak until this week.

Minnesota Agency Spokesperson Jeff Stollenwerk says there are protocols that normally are followed, but questions have been raised.

Stollenwerk stresses they are now investigating the incident.

Stollenwerk adds monitoring of Rainy River continues, but so far they’ve found no obvious negative impacts.
