Support And Opposition To Pipeline Purchase

There’s continued push back to the Trudeau government’s decision to purchase the Kinder Morgan pipeline in Western Canada for $4.5-billion.

In Thunder Bay Monday, activists like Lana Ray protested at the office of Labour Minister Patty Hajdu.

Ray says it’s absolutely appalling that the government thinks that buying a pipeline from a foreign oil company is a good investment for Canadians.

She adds what’s not to say that pipeline development will be part of the future in northwestern Ontario, noting it was tried with Energy East with no regards to public concern.

Dan McTeague, a Senior Petroleum Analyst with GasBuddy.com, feels the vocal minority of protesters are misinformed and environmentalists are hurting us in the long run.

McTeague says “this is absolute economic insanity being driven by a very small, committed group of people, who believe the sky is falling”.

He calls it a very, very weak argument and it’s hurting Canadians and hurting our bottom line.

McTeague says we have to get our product to market, and the pipeline is a good investment in the long run.

McTeague notes like it or not, fossil fuels are the way of the future, noting they guarantee our standard of living.

He adds not being able to get our oil to market has weakened the Canadian Dollar, leading to an increased cost of living for all Canadians.

McTeague says we wouldn’t tolerate this blockage if it was to sell our lumber, minerals or fish.
