Province Invests Money In Municipalities
Area municipalities are receiving provincial dollars to help prepare for future growth.
Ontario is investing up to 8.1-million dollars dollars to support projects that will help 115 small and rural municipalities.
Dryden will use the funds to conduct a Service Delivery and Organizational review, while municipal service delivery reviews will be carried out in Ignace and Machin.
Sioux Lookout is also launching a Municipal Services and Budget Line review and is looking into the future of its Information Technology system.
Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark says the goal is to help communities lower costs and find better ways to deliver important municipal services like roads, waste management and fire services.
The money comes from the Municipal Modernization Program.
Machin Mayor Outlines Major Needs
Machin Mayor Gord Griffiths is asking for provincial help to address two major concerns in his community.
Griffiths led a delegation at a pre-budget consultation held in Kenora earlier this week.
During his presentation, one of the things he asked for was help paying for some hydro costs.
“You want to keep your recreation centres open but the hydro cost, especially for an arena, is the big one. We do have our ice plant on a separate metre, we’re watching the numbers and they keep climbing and climbing.”
Another ask from Griffiths was help for repairing their gravel roads, which were hit hard by last year’s flooding.
“The costs that we have to maintain the 78 kilometres of gravel roads that we have, we have a lot of ditching that needs to be done. There’s so much work and we just don’t have the tax base to do it. We’re always looking for additional help to try and deal with that.”
Griffiths says he appreciated the platform offered by the government.
“It’s nice when they get out of Toronto and actually come here and listen to you. You can write stuff on paper (and) they can read it, but if they hear it in person, I think it’s so much more valuable.”
Boil Water Advisory Lifted
The water is safe to drink again in Vermilion Bay.
The Municipality of Machin has lifted a boil water advisory.
Officials state turbidity levels have returned to a normal range.
The notice to boil tap water for at least one minute was issued yesterday.
Residents should still run their taps for 5 to 10 minutes to flush water from their local plumbing and ensure fresh water is being drawn from the pipes.
