Local students heading back to class today are facing more uncertainty as the labour dispute between public school teachers and the government deepens.
Many teachers are furious with the governing Liberals for imposing contracts which cut their benefits and froze most of their wages.
Most teachers say they won’t resume extracurricular activities, despite Premier Dalton McGuinty’s request that they do so.
Meantime, Ontario’s Liberal leadership hopefuls are divided on how they’d try to end the labour strife with public school teachers.
The topic was barely mentioned during yesterday’s candidates’ debate in Ajax, east of Toronto.
Former education minister Gerard Kennedy was the only one who said he’d rip up the two-year collective agreements.
None of the other candidates said they’d go that far, but almost all promised to meet with union leaders to try to resolve the
dispute
