Teaching Parents At DHS About Mental Health

An educational session for parents to learn about mental health issues affecting adolescents at Dryden High School.

The presentation taught listeners about self-harm and issues that affect both girls and boys mental health.

Presenter and local Counsellor Sheri McMenemy says students may self harm as a way to escape emotional pain, punish themselves or use it to reach a natural high to numb themselves.

She also mentions that girls tend to struggle with problems related to self-image, so avoid talking about weight and focus on encouraging healthy behaviours and bring up the health and energy improvements that come with it.

McMenemy says boys tend to be more quiet and can take a long time to share their emotions so it is best to make sure to give them time and actively listen to them.

She also says social media plays a significant role in mental health problems and should be limited to around 2 hours a day at most.
