Unifor says a tentative four year contract with Resolute Forest Products could set the tone for future talks with other mills, including Domtar in Dryden.
Officials say it is seen as a pattern contract for other mill negotiations in the country.
Details of the deal haven’t been released but the union says it will ensure members receive fair compensation and creates local investment during a time when the forest industry is under attack from the U.S.
Officials say the agreement focuses on renewing and retaining the workforce.
Unifor says contract priorities centred on wages, vacations, benefits, pension plans and job security.
Workers at the Thunder Bay Resolute mill along with others in Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic region, still have to vote on the deal.
