Tick Season Raises Concerns Of Lyme Disease

Health officials have started to monitor and test ticks that could carry Lyme disease.

The culprits are called blacklegged ticks, and they hide in tall grass and brush and can latch on to exposed skin.

There have been numerous reports of the population growing in northwestern Ontario, with several people already indicating they have come home with a tick attached to their clothing or skin.

Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams admits the population of black-legged ticks is spreading.

However, Dr. Williams notes the number of confirmed cases of Lyme disease last year appears to have levelled off.

He believes more and more people are now getting the message about prevention.

Dr. Williams says if you are unwell and believe you are the victim of a tick bite, than you should visit your health care provider right away.

He notes for those who are infected, the sooner you get treated, the less severe the symptoms will be.

Dr. Williams says everyone should be covered up when going outdoors in high grass or brush.

He also recommends tucking your pants into your socks and covering exposed skin and wearing repellent containing DEET.

He notes when you return home, make sure you check your clothes and he recommends taking a shower.
