Northwestern Ontario continues to be plagued by a tick problem and that’s not only cause for concern for us but for our four legged friends.
Veterinarian Dr. Elisha Dickinson-Mills says when dealing with your pets you should remove the tick close to the skin at the base.
She recommends using a tool specifically designed for tick-removal.
When it comes to things you shouldn’t do, Dr. Dickinson-Mills says you shouldn’t be trying to smother the tick with anything like peroxide or petroleum jelly or burning the tick.
She warns upsetting the tick increases the speed at which Lyme disease is transmitted.
Dr. Dickinson-Mills says ticks aren’t going away so it’s just one of those things that we need to adapt to.
