Needed repairs to the roof at the Dryden Memorial Arena likely won’t be happening this year.
Council doesn’t appear to be on board with a staff recommendation to fix the roof at a cost of roughly $64,000.
It was included in a proposal by a Winnipeg based contractor when the City sought tenders to repair the roof at the Police Detachment, which will easily gain Council approval next Monday.
That roof has been leaking for a couple of years now but repairs have been put off due to the financial situation facing the City.
Norm Bush says the arena roof wasn’t included in the 2015 budget and calls it a “last minute” surprise.
He questions where it fits with other projects that were removed from the budget.
Ken Moss calls the situation at the arena a “disgrace”, noting kids and patrons often have to walk around buckets of water inside the building.
Mary Trist notes the arena roof needs to be fixed and stresses it should be included in the 2016 budget.
Lumping the two projects together would have cost nearly $143,000, with the City saving $1,500.
Staff had budgeted $185,000 for the work.
