Thunder Bay has never seen anything like it, a record 11 murders in one year.
Especially hearbreaking is the story of 8-year-old Brandi Wingert. Police say the young girl died at her Donald Street home during a domestic dispute between her mother and her mother’s ex-boyfriend, who also died after a standoff with police.
The stabbing death of 20-year-old Daniel Levac of Sachigo Lake in front of the SilverCity movie theatre, also sent shock waves through the city, while the bitter two-month strike at the local Bombardier plant was another top headline.
In Dryden, the city started 2014 with a $40 million deficit. That was quickly turned around with aggressive budget cutting, including layoffs. The city’s deficit has since shrunk to $20 million.
In Fort Frances, Resolute Forest Products shut down its kraft mill in the community and has put it up for sale. The mill is being heated for the winter months, in hopes a buyer can be found.
And in Kenora, high water levels at Lake of the Woods caused hundreds of thousands of dollars damage to docks, boathouses and shoreline property. (File photo)
