Toronto Mayor Stirs the Pot

It didn’t take long for Toronto’s new Mayor to become the talk of Thunder Bay.
Rob Ford’s vow to stop Toronto’s fleet of streetcars is a concern in Thunder Bay for everyone from politicians to business people to union members.
Officials at Bombardier say they will continue to work on
existing Provincial and Toronto Transit contracts for nearly 400 streetcars and more than 200 subway cars.
Ripping up contracts including a $770-million deal for
Bombardier to build an additional 182 streetcars for Ontario’s Metrolinx would be complicated and could cost taxpayers millions in cancellation fees.
Thunder Bay-Atikokan Liberal MPP Bill Mauro says he is concerned and people should take Ford’s threat seriously.
Paul Pugh, the local C-A-W president, says it makes no sense to cancel million-dollar contracts and then incur huge cancellation fees.
He says that’s a “weird way of trying to be frugal.”
