Treaties Recognition Week Celebrated By Area MPP

This is Treaties Recognition Week.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford was at Beaver Brae School in Kenora Monday to kick-off activities.

He says it’s crucial young students understand Canada’s past.

“I think we have to institutionalize our past, by that I mean put into our schools, build facilities and assets that commemorate and celebrate and create opportunities for our students to learn.”

The Indigenous Affairs Minister says by increasing understanding of treaty agreements, we move toward reconciliation creating fair and respectful relationships.

There is also a new tool on the Indigenous Affairs Ontario website to help anyone learn how Ontario was shaped and the impact of the treaties.
