Grand Council Treaty Three is hoping to have its own police service up and running by the end of this year.
The biggest hurdle remaining is obtaining funding to operate the first nations force.
Brian Rupert, technical supervisor for Treaty Three Police, says the provincial government has been very supportive but the federal government seems to be dragging its feet.
Rupert adds once funding is in place it will still take about three years before the force can operate on its own without support from the OPP.
