Darkness and low-intensity runway lights are to blame in a deadly plane crash near Pickle Lake.
The small plane arrived in the Pickle Lake Airport area and the pilot set up to land towards the west.
Transportation Safety Board Spokesperson, Peter Hildebrand tells CKDR what happened next.
“The plane was well above the normal altitude for arrivals into that area, a fairly steep descent started to develop, the descent continued and unfortunately the aircraft struck the ground a mile east of the runway.”
The crash killed two pilots and one of two passengers on board.
Hildebrand reveals what investigation reports found.
“We found that the dark environment would have led to a loss of situational awareness on the part of the pilot, relative to the airplanes position from the runway and the rate of descent.”
Hildebrand says that’s because there is very little to see at the Pickle Lake Airport and it would be hard to orient yourself by just looking at the ground.
The private plane was travelling from Lac La Biche, Alberta to Trios-Rivieres, Quebec.
