For the first time in more than 20 years, the Thunder Bay-Rainy River Riding will be represented by the New Democrats in Ottawa.
John Rafferty led the polls throughout election night en route to victory over Liberal incumbent Ken Boshcoff.
Rafferty won more than 40% of the vote (14,473 votes), Boshcoff had 32%. (11,589).
Rafferty credits the hard work of his campaign team and the voters belief in the N-D-P platform.
For Rafferty, it was his fourth federal election.
Conservative candidate Richard Neumann placed third with 8,466 votes and returning Green Party candidate Russ Aegard brought up the rear with 1,377.
The Thunder Bay-Superior North Riding also went orange with Bruce Hyer becoming the new Member of Parliament.
Hyer collected 12,799 votes to beat Liberal rookie Don McArthur who finished with 9,759.
Conservative Bev Sarafin finished with 9,231 votes.
The Green Party’s Brendan Hughes had 2,369 ballots cast in his name, while Marijuana Party candidate Denis Carriere finished with 321.
The seat was formally held by Joe Commuzzi who retired before the Election.
