Prime Minister Harper’s controversial softwood lumber deal with the
United States has cleared its first hurdle in the House of Commons.
The agreement passed Tuesday by a vote of 172-116.
Kenora Liberal MP Roger Valley voted against the deal and says the
issue needed more debate.

Valley says the agreement leaves $1-billion in the hands of
American lumber lobbyists.
The vote might have been the only chance for the Opposition to topple
the Tories.
