The Conservative Government isn’t backing down on its decision to close nine Veterans Affairs Offices across Canada.
Although the decision was made quite some time ago, Veterans and the Public Service Alliance Union of Canada haven’t given up the fight to reopen them.
Minister Erin O’Toole says in Thunder Bay’s case they saw only a few people a day.
He notes most people just visited the office to pick-up or drop-off forms.
O’Toole notes the Lakehead office and the Service Canada site are only a few kilometres apart so it made sense to offer it out of Service Canada.
He says most of the other offices in Canada were dated since they were built in the 1950’s.
O’Toole stresses they are providing care for Canada’s veterans and they aren’t leaving them to fend for themselves on a 1-800 line like some may suggest.
