The Transportation Safety Board has now recovered the cockpit voice recorder from the wreckage of a Bearskin Airlines plane that crashed Sunday near in Red Lake.
Spokesperson Peter Hildebrand says the plane hit the ground at a considerable speed, broke into several pieces and burst into flames.
Hildebrand says the recorders did suffer some damage from the impact of the crash and the fire.
He adds a number of trees fell on the wreckage and the violence of the crash is making the investigation difficult.
Hildebrand says while the plane itself has had issues in the past but they didn’t relate to the air worthiness of the airplane.
Hildebrand says there was some sort of emergency on the plane before it crashed two miles short of the runway.
There are reports surfacing that the plane experienced engine problems during the flight.
Officials with the TSB are expected to remain on scene for the rest of the week,
Red Lake Mayor Phil Vinet says the community continues to mourn the loss of the five people killed in the crash.
