As winter road maintenance continues to be under the microscope in northwestern Ontario, one contractor has been told its standards are not up to par.
The contractor maintaining Highway 17 between Terrace Bay and Marathon has received an issue of ‘non-conformance’ from the Ministry of Transportation.
Sections of the road were closed during a winter storm late last month.
The exact penalty won’t be determined until the company has a chance to respond.
The contractor has been told to ensure it has an adequate supply of winter salt at each of its maintenance yards.
The province has issued new performance targets for contractors including a guarantee to plow the Trans-Canada Highway every 2.2 hours in a snowstorm and plowed to bare pavement within 16 hours of the end of a storm.
