Working Outside In The Extreme Cold Poses Health Concerns

You may want to double up on warm clothes if you work outside.
If your fingers, toes and nose aren’t covered up properly, you can get frost bite or frost nip.
Northwestern Health Unit Public Health Inspector Rick Pascoe says the toes, fingers and nose are at a greater risk because they don’t have major muscles to produce heat.
He says the first sign of frost bite is the skin turning red.
Pascoe says the skin will then become white in colour and you will lose sensation of feeling.
He says windchill values of minus 28 Celsius to minor 39 Celsius are a big concern.
Pascoe adds there is a possibility of the corneas of the eyes freezing in extreme windchill conditions, so it’s recommended goggles be worn.
