Not good news for employees at the Abitibi-Consolidated newsprint mill in Kenora.
The company has completed an in-depth review of the mill and had decided to close one of two remaining paper machines.
The #9 machine will be permanently closed as of October and Abitibi says it will also be idling the remaining paper machine indefinitely.
Company C.E.O. John Weaver says they are continuing to talk with the provincial government about ways of reducing operating costs.
He says assuming a deal can be reached, they will look at restructuring the newsprint mill under a one-paper machine scenario.
