It is with great sadness that the family of Albert Lands, age 78 of Eagle Lake First Nation, announce his passing at his residence on Tuesday, August 27, 2002.
Albert was predeceased by his mother Agatha Keesic, father George Lands, brothers Alex Lands and Rovert Lands, sister Jenny Meesic, Margorie Keesic. Also by Albert Keesic, Robert and Rosalie Lands and Alec and Verna Lands.
Albert Lands is survived by his wife Rose of 61 years; sons Ray Landon, Walter Skead Lands, Bryan Albert Lands and daughter, Barbara Landon. Many close relatives Brenda Morison, Ruth E. Bird, Stella Montour, Marty Robert Lands, Norman James Lands, Mitchell Ray Lands, Patrick Lands, Christa Lands and Margaret, Mary and Danny.
Albert was born in Grassy Narrows in 1924. He attended residential school in McIntosh, leaving at the age of 14 together with Rose, his wife and companion for the next 61 years. They lived in McIntosh for many years moving later to Shoal Lake, Manitoba, returning to the community of Eagle Lake to spend his final days. He followed the teachings of the Anishnaabe, leading a traditional lifestyle of trapping, hunting, guiding, and picking blueberries and wild rice. His physical prowess and skills in living off the land, and in harmony with nature, made him unique.
He was a teacher of traditional ways and those he taught speak of Albert as a man of humour and a humble man who helped youth and gave life to things. He taught through his stories, his healing songs, by sharing his sacred items, and by showing others how to live now, in the moment. Albert was a singer with the hand drum and knew some of the old songs that were sung centuries ago. He was always willing to impart his teachings in a loving way when people asked questions and sought his advice as a community elder and spiritual advisor. It made him feel good to try and help others.
Visitation for the late Albert Lands was held at the First Nation Community Hall until time of service. Traditional Funeral Services for Albert Lands were held on Saturday, August 31, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. with Elder Robert Kelly officiating. Interment followed in the Eagle Lake First Nation’s Cemetery.
