Atikokan Mayor Asking For Long Term Commitment On Power Plants

Atikokan Mayor Dennis Brown is asking for provincial assurances that Ontario Power Generation plants in his community and in Thunder Bay are around for the next 100 years.

Brown says the facilities are vital to the region’s future electricity needs and to support both municipalities.

He says mines are being developed and power is being expanded to First Nations communities.

However, Brown notes there has been no mention of the role the northern facilities will play in provincial energy plans.

Premier Kathleen Wynne says the region needs every part of that supply, and is committed to working with the northwest to ensure that happens.
