Long Term Care Concerns In Ontario

A new CBC report is raising alarm bells about resident abuse in long term care homes.

The report shows Birchwood Terrace in Kenora has the highest rate of resident-to-resident abuse and second highest rate of staff-to-resident abuse.

Bob Morton is the Executive Director of AdvantAge, an agency that advocates for improved seniors care, and says the results aren’t surprising.

Morton says it comes down to the residents needing more than what is being offered right now.

Morton notes the long term care sector hasn’t experienced an increase in funding to meet current needs.

He adds the higher number of reported incidents does not necessarily reflect a home with worsening conditions, rather it can show a facility that reports any and all incidents for the sake of transparency and safety.
