The Mayor of Atikokan isn’t caught off-guard at a decision by Osisko Mining to hold back on immediate plans to establish a gold mine.
Plans for the mine are being slowed by low metal prices and high construction costs.
Dennis Brown says council was hoping the project would move forward. The town did several studies to prepare itself for a possible mine, but knew the potential of it not going ahead. Osisko still has 3-employees in Atikokan and they’re still running property, and Brown says the good news is that the project isn’t being scrapped completely.
Brown adds there’s still plenty of activity in the community such as Resolute’s development and the Rentech Mill which is expected to be operational by February 2014.
