Bearskin Air Crash near Red Lake

Ontario Provincial Police confirm five are dead in the crash of a Bearskin Airlines Fairchild Metroliner near the Red Lake Airport late this (Sunday) afternoon.

A police spokesman says both pilots and three passengers were killed in the crash and ensuing fire. According to police, the aircraft broke in two on impact.

A male passenger sitting near the rear of the aircraft was able to drag a female passenger clear before flames engulfed the plane. The same passengers used his cell phone to notify police.

Meanwhile, Hydro One crews continue to work to restore service to some 900 customers who lost power as a result of the crash.

The aircraft is reported to have come down just short of the runway.
