Catholic School Board Using Visual Aids To Improve Math Scores

The Kenora Catholic District School Board is trying to flip the script at all of its schools including St. John’s in Red Lake.

Recent provincial standardized testing revealed a decline in math scores in younger students across the province and the Board is working to bring up their scores.

Numeracy Facilitator Jordan Temple says they are now using a number of visual activities that really help to incorporate different theories and ideas.

Temple says if you can try and show math in a visual way, it opens up different parts of the brain.

He notes it’s also more fun for the students and helps them enjoy mathematics more.

Temple says their is a math support person in all of their schools, and some classes have started to incorporate card games for quick mental math.
