The cause of a massive fire that destroyed a popular Ignace grocery store owned by Mayor Lee Kennard remains unknown.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been contacted to assist in the investigation.
Gramma’s Supermarket burst into flames early Tuesday morning.
Fire Chief Robert Berube says they were able to save the neighbouring hotel as well as nearby buildings.
Berube notes it was a group effort in “very difficult” conditions.
The challenges included frigid cold temperatures and high wind.
Berube says his firefighters received needed help from Wabigoon Fire, Dryden Fire, Hydro One, Union Gas and Ignace Public Works.
He is sending his condolences to the Kennard family, noting it’s a big loss.
Fortunately no one was injured.
Firefighters continue to mop up and put water on various hot spots.
