Kenora MP Greg Rickford says a Justin Trudeau decision to order his party’s senators to sit as independents smacks of something suspicious.
Rickford believes it’s a preemptive strike to avoid a Liberal expense scandal.
The Minister of State believes the Liberal leader is trying to distance himself from an upcoming Auditor General report on Senator spending that is said to be “nasty”.
Rickford calls it a “stunt that accomplishes nothing”.
He says Trudeau should instead concentrate his efforts on helping the Conservatives move towards an elected senate.
Rickford says the move only means that the party continues to support an unelected and unaccountable Senate.
The Conservative even quotes the Liberal Senate Caucus leader who stated “I suspect not a great deal will change. I am not a former Liberal. I’m a Liberal. And I’m a Liberal Senator.”
