Chief Coroner Promising To Address First Nations Fire Deaths

Ontario’s Chief Coroner is planning to address a rash of fire deaths in First Nations communities.

Dr. Dirk Huyer is commenting on a call by the Nishnawbe Aski Nation for an inquest into a house fire last year that killed nine people in Pikangikum.

Huyer is considering a look at all First Nations fire deaths over the last several years.

He says looking at other related incidents could help zero in on the issues that NAN is concerned about.

Huyer notes he plans to discuss the issue with First Nations leaders and the Fire Marshal to get their views.

He adds he wants to be informed to make the proper decision on what is the most productive and effective method to address the concerns.
