The Chief Medical Officer of Health of the Northwestern Health Unit has upped the ante in a bid to have workplaces and public spaces declared smoke-free.
Dr. Pete Sarsfield has sent letters to all 19 municipal councils in the Kenora and Rainy River Districts advising them he has declared tobacco smoke a health hazard.
Sarsfield says the advisory now puts municipalities on notice that this is now a liability issue.
He feels communities are putting themselves at risk both legally and morally by allowing a health hazard such as tobacco smoke.
Despite an extensive postcard campaign, he adds no municipality has moved on a smoke-free bylaw yet.
