Collaboration In Mental Heath and Addiction Services Requires Overlapping

There is a willingness in Canada to change the way we deliver mental health and addiction services.

Consultant Todd Leader wrote the book “It’s Not About Us; The Secret to Transforming the Mental Health and Addiction System in Canada” and he spoke to stakeholders about how these systems evolved since Freud’s time which involved asylums.

He says often when various mental health providers attempt collaboration they tend to protect their turf by drawing a circle in the sand around themselves.

He says the prevention of the phrase “falling through the cracks” will only happen if we bring those circles together allowing them to overlap.

Leader says that means administrators have to get comfortable with their staff doing things that are a little bit outside their mandate.
