The Canadian Wildlands League of Ontario says allowing the De Beers
company to build a massive open pit mine in a Northern First Nation would
harm wildlife and the residents of Attawapiskat.
Director Anna Baggio says the mine will affect an area of 260,000
hectares of wilderness, 4-times the size of Toronto.
She says the project will destroy woodland carious, bird and fisheries
habitat and will pump an unnatural amount of salt water into the local
river.
The group is calling on the Premier to conduct land use planning
before any new major developments.
