The food budget for a family of four in the Kenora and Rainy River district is nearing the $1,000 a month mark.
That’s a $60 increase over last year’s study.
Julie Slack is with the Northwestern Health Unit.
Slack says the cost of food in the north is forcing many low-income earners to make unhealthy food choices because the price of healthy foods are becoming too out of reach.
She notes the rising prices do show the need to strengthen community gardens, school breakfast programs and food banks even more.
