Cost To Fight Forest Fires On The Rise

More help on the forest fire front.

The provincial government is earmarking an additional $100-million to offset the costs of fighting fires.

Normally, $70-million is spent on fire fighting efforts.

Some of the money will go to paying the firefighters and support staff that are helping from other provinces, the U.S. and Mexico.

About 480 firefighters and support staff from outside Ontario are currently working along side the nearly 1,000 provincial fire rangers in northern and central Ontario.

Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Jeff Yurek says this has been one of the worst fire seasons in over a decade and they’ll dedicate as many resources necessary to fight the wildfires.

Right now there are 78 active fires burning across the northwest, 3 are considered not under control.

The forest fire hazard is moderate to high in the Dryden and Red Lake districts and moderate to low in other parts of the region.
