Ontario must work with Grassy Narrows and White Dog First Nations to address mercury contamination.
That demand comes from Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa.
Mamakwa says $85-million was put in trust to clean up the English-Wabigoon river system.
He notes the Premier promised during the election campaign to clean up the river and land as quickly as possible as well as ensure everyone receives high quality care.
At Queen’s Park, during loud and lengthy applause, Mamakwa questioned the government on “what has been done to fulfill the commitment”, stressing “when a promise is made to First Nations people, the first people of this land, it has to be kept”.
Mamakwa is also asking the province to contribute to a mercury treatment centre to help people in Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong and to consult with both communities.
