Cyber Security Awareness Campaign Launched

The Provincial Police are joining forces with law enforcement, government and other public safety partners to recognize Cyber Security Awareness Month.

The focus this year is highlighting the advanced threat posed by cybercriminals.

There has been an increase in cyber frau in northwestern Ontario, including Sioux Lookout.

At the end of September, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre received more than 6,000 complaints in Ontario of ‘cyberfraud’ through e-mail, internet or social media platforms.

The agency identified 3,659 victims who sustained combined losses of $17.84-million.

Phising, an email or text message that appears to be from a legitimate person or organization but contains malicious links or attachments, accounts for a majority of all reported incidents.

Police urge people to ensure your personal and confidential information is protected and never provide information to someone who do not know.
