The Town of Nipigon is in a state of shock after a fire destroyed the
50-year-old wood mill Tuesday.
Some 120-workers and their families watched in the bitter cold as the
blaze burned the Mill to the ground, filled the air with black smoke,
drained the local water supply and put the community on evacuation alert.
A local group purchased the plant in December and was planning to
spend $4-million to modernize it.
Workers had agreed to loan the new owners $300,00 and the Province
kicked in another $400,000.
A state of emergency is in effect as some Nipigon residents have been
forced from their home, water has been shipped in and schools have been
closed.
The cause is under investigation and no injuries are reported.
