Another blow to the forest industry in Northwestern Ontario.
Weyerhaeuser says the Timberstand Mill in Kenora has been indefintely
shutdown effective Tuesday because demand for engineered wood products has
declined due to a slowdown in the U.S. housing market.
Company Spokesperson Bonny Skene says they will taking several weeks
of downtime during the first quarter of this year.
The temporary lay-off effects 100 workers and another 41-workers will lose their jobs permanently.
Weyerhaeuser says further downtime may be necessary during the course
of the year in order to balance production with demand.
Some 100-staff will continue to work during the downtime.
The plant hopes to start up for 1 week in February and 1 week in
March if there is demand for timberstrand.
