The province’s decision to stop its driver’s licence renewal depots from operating out of small-town stores could result in a class-action lawsuit on behalf of retailers who have been issuing the licence’s for decades.
Lawyer David Sterns says the issuers have been a model of efficiency while providing the government service.
About 60 of the 265 retail-based driver’s licence renewal depots are to be moved into established ServiceOntario outlets in January.
Sterns says the potential class-action claim, to date back to 2003, could seek damages in the range of $50-million.
Outlets in Dryden and Keewatin are among those impacted.
