The Dryden Fire Service is fully supportive of a new law requiring carbon monoxide alarms in all Ontario homes.
A private members bill put forward four years ago by Tory MPP Ernie Hardeman has gained final approval in the legislature.
Fire Chief Ken Kurz says it’s an important step in keeping residents safe.
Kurz says most local homeowners already have a working alarm.
He notes carbon monoxide calls are very common for the Dryden Fire Service and probably surpass fire alarm calls.
Kurz warns that the life of a carbon monoxide detector is only about 7-years.
He admits enforcing the new rule will be difficult and notes they will be embarking on a public awareness campaign.
Carbon monoxide detectors are currently only required in homes constructed after 2001.
