National Chief Addresses First Nations Education

National Chief Shawn Atleo is addressing First Nations issues with aboriginal leaders.
Atleo says he has felt widespread support from communities wanting to have more of an influence on education.
He says they must achieve First Nations control of aboriginal education and must reject the current federal proposal.
Atleo notes the current plan is what they had in the residential school era and stresses that’s unacceptable.
Atleo stresses there’s no financial guarantee for children and no guarantee of First Nations culture and language.
He adds there’s a shortage of schools across the northwest and says kids in Pikangikum are being turned away because there’s no room for them.
