Emily Jackson

Emily Jackson was born November 9, 1920 in Rochdale, England, the third child in a family of eight. Emily worked as a Rover and Spinner at the Nehesco Mills in Walssden, England for 15 years. In 1952 Emily emigrated with her eight year old son Tony Blair the child of a previous marriage, to Winter, Saskatchewan. They arrived in Canada on May 24th in time to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday. There she married Douglas MacAleer and resided on a farm until Douglas’s death in 1963. She worked at the Unity Hospital before moving to Northwestern Ontario, where she got a job as a housekeeper at North Star Lodge. Emily married Howard Jackson on November 3, 1966 and they lived on the Jackson Homestead north of Quibell until 1991, when they bought their retirement home in Vermilion Bay. Emily spent a lot of time practicing and singing with a trio called “We Three”. They sang at the Senior Apartments in Dryden and Vermilion Bay. They also sang for senior functions, Remembrance Day, at various schools, and at church. She liked the outdoors, went fishing and camping at their cabin and in their 5th wheel trailer. She enjoyed working in her garden and her flowerbeds. She enjoyed knitting and canning and watching her Coronation Street show. She adored her four great grandchildren and always had a friendly reprimand, a new toque or scarf and a treat for them. Emily passed away at home on Tuesday July 1, 2003. Visitation was held on Saturday July 5, 2003 at the Vermilion Bay United Church from 11:00 a.m. till time of service. Funeral Services were held on Saturday July 5, 2003 at the Vermilion Bay United Church at 1:00 p.m. with Mr. Harry Toews officiating. Interment followed in the Quibell Cemetery. Family and friends gathered at the Happy Go Lucky Senior Club for refreshments and fellowship. Emily will be sadly missed by her husband Howard, her son Tony Blair and his wife Joyce. Their grandson Cameron and his son Daniel Blair, their granddaughter Lesley her husband Larry Tourond and their boys Travis, Steven and Conrad. Emily is survived by her three sisters in England – Annie, Joyce and Joan and many nieces and nephews in England and Canada. Many thanks to her neighbor Grace and Howard’s niece Grace who spent many hours sitting with Emily. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, a donation can be made to Northern Cancer Research through the Dryden Community Funeral Home, 249 Grand Trunk Ave., Dryden, ON P8N 2X3
