Long time Dryden resident, Evelyn McKen, passed away July 3, in Toronto, at the age of 90. Born in Hastings County, Ontario, Evelyn moved to Saskatchewan at an early age and grew up on farms in the Southey and Wolseley areas. She attended “Normal School” in Brandon Manitoba, graduating in 1931 and began her Iong teaching career in a one room school near Lorlie, Saskatchewan. She married Wilmer (Mac) McKen in 1937 and they moved to Dryden in 1940. Evelyn resided in Dryden until moving to Toronto in 2002. Evelyn taught for the Dryden Public School system for many years. Sbe described her later years, teaching special education classes, as her most rewarding. She will be remembered for her feisty spirit and “‘back to basics” philosophy of teaching. Evelyn was an active member of the Dryden United Church for as long as she was able and after retiring from teaching in 1974, devoted a great deal of time and effort to the creation of the United Church Archives. Evelyn is survived by her two children, Blair of Toronto and Jill (Ken) of Calgary. She was predeceased by her husband Wilmer (Mac) in 1987. A memorial service for the late Evelyn McKen will be held at the First United Church on August 5th at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ross Lockhart Officiating. Interment will follow at a later time.
