A major step to enhance safety for jail guards, officers and prisoners.
The Dryden Police Service has purchased a restraint chair to be used when certain conditions exist to help protect prisoners from themselves.
Acting Inspector Ann Tkachyk calls it a very humane and safe way to deal with individuals who are agitated, drunk or on drugs.
Tkachyk also calls it a deterrent for violent behaviour.
She adds it will bring down stress levels for guards and officers.
The chair is portable and light weight and can be used to transport people to hospital without endangering anyone.
She stresses they are mandated to provide safe and adequate care and this will go a long way to avoid any major incident.
Tkachyk says the chair is better and safer than handcuffing and shackling individuals and is used by police agencies across Canada, jails and the Canada Border Services.
Officers are now receiving training and then it will be put to use.
