Ontario is introducing new legislation that if passed would eliminate unnecessary barriers to employment, education and volunteer opportunities coming from the inappropriate release of non-conviction or mental health info found in a police record check.
The new standards for police record checks will implement the advice of a Minister’s round table on the issue.
The government feels the new legislation sets out a comprehensive set of standards for how police record checks are requested, conducted, and disclosed.
The Ministry of Community Safety says Ontarians have lost their jobs or have lost out on volunteer opportunities because of disclosed mental health records or simply because they witnessed a crime.
