Far North Legislation Presented

Ontario Natural Resources Minister Donna Cansfield has introduced Legislation that would protect at least 225,000 square kilometres in a network of conservation areas in the Far North.
The Bill ensures a community-based land use planning process to identify areas where development can take place to benefit First Nations.
Frank McKay is Chair for the Windigo First Nation Council north of Sioux Lookout and says the Legislation presents numerous opportunities for aboriginals.
Donna Cansfield says it will also help fight climate change.
The trees, soil and peat of Ontario’s Far North, which makes up 42 per cent of the province’s land mass, absorb an estimated 12.5-million tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere each year.
