The Trudeau Liberals are out with $4 million to keep the Experimental Lakes Area, west of Vermilion Bay, operating for another four years.
Kenora MP Bob Nault made the announcement on Wednesday.
Nault says the ELA is a science facility that the International community and the world needs.
He says the work being done and the contributions being made are extremely important.
Nault notes other area freshwater science facilities will see funding as well.
He says the funding commitment was included in their 2016 budget for ocean and freshwater science.
ELA Executive Director Matt McCandless calls the federal announcement “significant”, stressing it will allow them to continue their scientific research without interruption.
McCandless says they are currently monitoring fish stocks, water quality as well as animals that live around the water.
McCandless adds the long term monitoring of lakes is essentially the building block for all of the science and research they do.
“It is thanks to the funding we have received over the last four years that @IISD_ELA has been able to attract over $10 million in investment to #NorthernOntario…” @mattmccandless thanks @FishOceansCAN for their continued support of #cdnsci today at #Lake240 pic.twitter.com/7gDdI57a02
