Financial Accountability Officer Warning Province Won’t Meet Deficit Targets

More fuel for the opposition at Queen’s Park.

Ontario’s Financial Accountability Officer has released a report questioning the government’s ability to balance its books by 2017-2018.

The report suggests lower than expected revenues and high demand for services will hamper the government’s attempts to bring in a balanced budget in the next two years.

That has caught the attention of the Progressive Conservatives.

MPP Vic Fedeli says the government is in danger of running a “perpetual” deficit.

Fedeli adds he wants the Liberals to come clean and say how they plan to deal with the higher than forecast deficits.

He says the FAO is predicting a $3.5-billion deficit for 2017/2018.

Finance Minister Charles Sousa says there’s nothing to be alarmed at in the report.

Sousa says they are on track to beat its 2015-2016 deficit target and they are seeing steady improvements.
