Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing denies the Ford government is planning to cut the size of other city councils.
Steve Clark says they consulted widely with municipal leaders at the AMO conference last month, but it was about how to improve services and saving taxpayers money, not cutting the size of local government.
“Yes, we asked municipalities if they have ideas on how they can run better. We received lots of ideas. We received ideas on how we can reduce their regulatory burden. We had ideas on how to speed up the development process.”
NDP critic Jeff Burch says there have been suggestions the government will be targeting Ottawa City council next and maybe even the Niagara Regional Government.
